An Epic Sci–Fi Series Based on the Classic Isaac Asimov Novels

CBFX & KEDRON Collaboration

KEDRON had the privilege to create a design language for the launch of an epic series, Foundation. From dynamic force fields to HUD effects for tanks and guns; The collaboration with CBFX was second to none – their top notch compositing mixed with KEDRON’s strong Art Direction has made a great impression on the Apple tv streaming network.

FORCE FIELD // Conceptual Progression

The exploration for the forcefield was extensive. Our approach was to create compelling designs, by way of shapes and multi-tiered elements, that would move independently, but also work as a whole. The forcefield only became visible when something (a human or object) would breach the space of the host. It was highly interactive and our goal was to make it feel alive.

KEDRON worked closely with CBFX’s compositing team preparing carefully constructed RGB source files that would give the team a wide range of ability for VFX integration with the live action. Every step was very calculated with a lot of iterations in order to get the most dynamic living elements possible. At the center of Foundation’s story is something called psychohistory, which is a way of using mathematics to analyze the behaviors of large populations. Calculated graphics proved appropriate for this animation element of the story. The Fibonacci sequence/design was a catalyst for the concept direction that aired.

GUN HUD // Conceptual Progression

The Gun HUD was developed by creating very intricate designs with a lot of sub-level animation in mind. With several key functions on screen. The key with this HUD was to work off the idea of hierarchy. We constantly asked ourselves which part of the design is most important to the story. This helped in the concept and development phase. Working back and forth from design to compositing we brought focus on the cross-hairs of the scope and put less emphasis on the supporting HUD.

TANK HUD // Conceptual Progression

The Tank HUD was developed based on the Anacreon tribe. They are less sophisticated in the expanse of this sci-fi world. Therefore the HUD was developed to be a bit more blocky with larger elements of design. The interface framing is still intricate, but overall the design is simple and to the point.
